The Growth Audit

The trick is something I call a daily growth audit.

All you have to do is complete a painless 5 – 10 minute writing exercise before bed each night in which you answer the following three questions:

1.  What’s something that didn’t go well for me today?

2. What role did I play in causing it?

3. How can I avoid/improve upon this in the future?

Once you’ve answered these 3 questions, you’re done! The next day, you’ll repeat the writing exercise, and will also reread what you wrote the night before.

For best results, I recommend doing the growth check everyday for at least 21 days!

Of course, you can do if for less than or more than 21 days, depending on what works for you. That being said, here’s why I believe at least 21 days is best!

Why 21 Days?

A. Studies have shown that 21 days is the approximate length of time it takes to form a new habit

B. You’ll get a much better picture of the habits and behaviors you need to work on than if you only do it for a few days

C. It’s going to get more and more challenging to think of things to write down as you go along, and this is a great thing!

By the time you get about halfway through, you’ll probably have to think really hard about what you need to work on, because you’ll have hopefully already improved many things since the first day.

It’s often the ideas you have to wrack your brain the hardest to find that will pay you back the most!

It’s All In The 3 Questions!

I repeat, the only work you have to do is to give thoughtful answers to the 3 questions each night, and briefly review your answers from any previous nights! After 21 days, you’ll have made tremendous progress!

Let’s break down the three questions!

1: What’s something that didn’t go well for me today?

The purpose of this question is to help you identify some key areas where you have some room for growth!

By writing out your answer, you’re clearly identifying a problem or area you can improve on.

You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know it exists!

2. What role did I play in causing it?

Nobody’s perfect! The point here isn’t to beat yourself up, but instead to help you increase your awareness.

Not everything is within your control, but it’s important to be honest with yourself about the things that are!

3. How can I avoid/improve upon this in the future?

By answering this question, you’re essentially giving yourself an action step to take in the future!

Often just coming up with a better solution and solidifying it in writing really helps you to improve the next time something similar comes up!

Go ahead and try this out. You might surprise yourself with the results you get!
