How to Calculate your GPA by Hand for a Single Semester
Calculating your GPA by hand obviously takes more work than using the GPA calculator. The process is slower and has a higher chance of error if you put something into the formula the wrong way. This aside, it’s actually easy to do once you see how it’s done.
There are several ways I’ve seen the formula to calculate GPA expressed. The way that I’m going to show you is my own way. I find it’s the simplest to understand if you’re at all math phobic (as I used to be).
The formula to calculate your GPA by hand is this:
(course 1 grade scale value * course 1 # of credits) + (course 2 grade scale value * course 2 # credits)…/ total # of credits = GPA
Hopefully you see that if you have more than 2 courses, you just keep adding the course grade scale value multiplied by the number of course credits until you’ve included every course. From there, you just divide by the total up the credits for all the courses.
By now you might be wondering what I mean by course grace scale value. Don’t worry! This table will clear this up for you:
So for example, if your grade in course 1 is a B, you would plug a 3 into the formula for course 1 grade scale value.
And if instead you had a C in course 1, you would plug a 2 into the formula for course 1 grade scale value.
So basically, for a single course all you do is find the grade scale value that corresponds to your grade in that course. Then you multiply this by the # of credits for that course. Repeat for each course, add up all these values and divide by the total number of course credits.
If you want to determine your overall/cumulative GPA by hand, just keep putting courses into the top part of the fraction (the numerator) until you’ve accounted for every course you took!
